In the audio clip below, I recount a meaningful family tradition that my family observes every year. The tradition was originally started by my grandmother and great-grandmother, however none of them are alive today to retell the story themselves. These traditions were passed down to me, and I continue to carry them on.

My Experience

The tradition of my family coming together to celebrate the holidays is something I look foreward to every year. My cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles all come together to spend time together while making bischochitos and tamales. The traditions were orignially passed down by my great-grandmother to the women in my family, however it continues to be celebrated by all. Cooking with my family is a special memory that I hope to hold forever and pass down to my children for generations to come.

The Story of My Family Tradition

Making homemade biscochitos and tamales every year around Christmas is a widespread Mexican and New Mexican tradition celebrated for generations. This food tradition celebrates Hispanic culture while bringing families together. My family carries out this tradition annually, with my entire family, including, men women and children participating. However, like traditional practices of making tamales and biscochitos only the women in my family know the recipes and how to properly make them. The men in my family always help but they do not know how to execute the recipes like my mother or aunts. Historically, in Mexican culture, women are expected to cook and take care of other domestic duties while men worked outside of the home. This holiday tradition was originally created by both my grandmother and great-grandmother and was carried down by the women in my family. The importance of women carrying out this tradition is very important to its ethnic and culture significance. Cooking traditions are very important to the lives of many Mexican women worldwide.

Although tamales and biscochitos are universally constructed in the same way, there are many variations regarding ingredients. Unlike other traditional recipes, my family recipe includes red chile in the masa. Additionally, my family only uses chile that was grown on my great-grandfathers farm. Although he is not alive today, my uncles and grandfather still maintain the farm and harvest chile every year. The practice of only using my great-grandfathers chile every year is a family tradition that has been carried on for generations. In addition to variations in ingredients, my family utilizes a unique cooking technique to create biscochitos. Unlike, traditional practices of making biscochitos as small round cookies, my family utilizes a special tool to create a flower design. The tool is a small round metal plate that has flower-petal impressions. The tool is then pressed down onto the raw cookies before placing them in the oven, creating a flower design. This cookie stamping tool was created by my great-grandfather for my great-grandmother, as she loved flowers and wanted her cookies to look like them. Cooking tools, ingredients, and techniques are very important to many food traditions. The incorporation of red chile into the tamale masa and the distinctive flower shape of my great-grandmother’s cookies distinguish my family’s traditions from those of others.

Cooking Tamales and biscochitos is deeply rooted in Mexican ethnic and cultural traditions that have been passed down for generations. Tamales are one of the oldest foods eaten today, with historians dating its origins as far back as 5,000 B.C. They are believed to have been created and enjoyed by the Mayans, Aztecs and Olmecs in early Mesoamerica. Tamales are mostly made up of masa, which is a thick dough made from corn. Wheat and flour were not available to the communities occupying these regions, forcing them to utilize corn in many of their dishes. Today, corn is still the main ingredient in masa, despite the integration of wheat in various Mexican dishes. Traditional ingredients and techniques remain very important to the traditions of many Mexican families worldwide. The tradition of making tamales and biscochitos every holiday season is not only important in bringing my family together but also helps us to celebrate our ethnicity and culture.
